Whyalla residents lead the way in waste management

Waste Officer

Whyalla City Council’s ongoing commitment to waste management is achieving strong results, thanks to the success of numerous waste education programs, in particular ‘Take the Pledge’.

Since its launch in January, over 550 households have participated, with 800 kitchen caddy kits distributed. The community’s efforts in waste reduction are evident, with seven winners recognised for their outstanding bin management.

Education campaigns at local events and schools have reached over 2,500 people, helping divert 260,330 kg of waste from landfill in 2023/2024.

Council is also addressing illegal bin use and continues to improve waste management through educational outreach and landfill diversion strategies.

H.O.G Rally event success

Harley motorbikes roared through Whyalla, kicking off their journey from Roopena Football and Sporting Club. Residents lined the streets, cheering on the riders as they made their way through the city to the Whyalla Foreshore.

The rest of the day was jam-packed with activities for the whole family, including a Show and Shine, Gymkhana Chapter Games, local market stalls, food vendors, and so much more.

The Group enjoyed a presentation from our Community Activation Officer - Tourism Assets, Paul Mazourek. The presentation was held at Point Lowly and included the significant geological history, Aboriginal heritage, and early European exploration.

A massive thank you to the Whyalla community for making this event so special, and to the S.A. Harley Owners Group for choosing Whyalla as this year’s host. We loved having you and hope to welcome you back in the future!

Starting Monday October 14, the four shade shelters on the Whyalla Foreshore will be temporarily removed for refurbishment as part of the Foreshore Masterplan.

The red area (pictured below) marks the safety-fenced and signage area for traffic management, while the yellow area will be the machinery work zone. These upgrades are part of the 2024/2025 budget to brighten up our city, we'll provide another update once they're ready to be reinstalled.

Ada Ryan trees impacted by strong winds

Ada Ryan Gardens trees

Due to strong winds recently, several trees at Ada Ryan Gardens have been impacted. A tree near the playground area collapsed but has now been safely removed, and the area is open to the public.

However, two more trees on the Watson Terrace side have fallen limbs, with one branch still hanging. Due to ongoing weather conditions and forecasted winds, it is currently unsafe to remove the hanging branch.

An exclusion zone has been set up on Watson Terrace for your safety. We urge everyone to use caution when accessing this area. We will provide confirmation once the area is cleared and safe for public access.

Our teams are working hard to make the area safe. Thank you for your understanding.

Ongoing Vandalism in Whyalla

Phill and Tamy

Vandalism remains a persistent problem in Whyalla, with recent acts affecting one of Whyalla’s most popular landmarks.

Vandals have damaged the bollards at Hummock Hill, which are crucial for providing lighting and safety to the community. The damage is significant, leaving the council and ratepayers to pay for the repair costs.

Mayor Phill Stone addressed the recent incident, stating, "It’s incredibly disappointing to see these repeated acts of vandalism. Hummock Hill is a place beloved by our community, and this behaviour is not only destructive but costly.''

If you have any information about these incidents or witness any suspicious activity, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Your information can remain anonymous.
