The search for Whyalla's brightest starts now

The search for Whyalla’s most dedicated and deserving community members has begun, with nominations open for the 2025 Citizen of the Year Awards.

The annual awards celebrate the city’s many generous residents and achievers, who give up their time to give back to the community. This week we sat down with the 2024 Community Service Award winner, Teresa Coles, to talk about the importance of these awards in our community.

Teresa was recognised for her efforts across sports, music, events, small businesses, and tourism. She encouraged people to start thinking about worthy nominees now, with  Whyalla City Council accepting nominations year-round.

"It was a bit of a shock, but it was certainly lovely to be acknowledged in that space and for somebody else to acknowledge the work that I do," Teresa said.

"If you know of somebody that’s worthy of nominating that you know is doing great stuff in our community, please contact council or head over to the website and you can put those nominations in at any time."

There are lots of awards you can nominate community members for, including

  • The Citizen of the Year
  • The Senior Citizen of the Year
  • The Young Citizen of the Year
  • Multiple Community Services awards

The categories reward and recognise individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution during the past year while having regard to their previous achievements and ongoing contribution over and above normal employment duties. Outstanding contribution and community service includes areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary service, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of the community.

To be eligible, the person must be an Australian citizen, and under 30 years of age on January 26, 2025 for the young citizen category and over 65 for the senior citizen award.
