Stormwater upgrade - May 2023

23 May 2023

Whyalla City Council is undertaking significant upgrades at the Broadbent Terrace / Essington Lewis Avenue intersection to improve stormwater runoff and reduce potential traffic issues.

The works are now underway, with residents urged to be aware of changed conditions, particularly reduced speeds and possible congestion over the next three-to-four weeks. Council suggests planning an alternate route where possible.

The project involves the installation of additional stormwater infrastructure, which will better capture and manage the disposal of the excessive stormwater runoff.

Council will also reconfigure the existing traffic islands at the intersection to improve traffic flow, while addressing safety concerns raised by residents.

In terms of the changes to expect:

  • Eastbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane through the work zone
  • Westbound traffic will be diverted to the Broadbent Terrace service road (between Blight Street and Frick Street)
  • Essington Lewis Avenue will only be accessible to local traffic between Kittel Street and Broadbent Terrace, as well as Hockey Street between Goodman Street and Broadbent Terrace

Further updates will be provided as works progress and traffic conditions change over the coming weeks.
