Nominations open for Citizen of the Year Awards
The search for Whyalla’s most dedicated and deserving community members has begun, with nominations open for the 2024 Citizen of the Year Awards.
The annual awards celebrate the city’s many generous residents and achievers, who give up their time to give back to the community.
Mayor Phill Stone is urging the public to consider nominating a well-deserving resident so the city can acknowledge some of Whyalla’s quiet achievers for the betterment of the broader community.
''There are many locals in our community who give their heart and soul to make Whyalla a better place. Often just doing what they do for the love of it and not the recognition. We want to see them recognised and we need your help to nominate them for an award.'' Mayor Stone said.
Past Young Citizen of the Year, Alicia Renton spoke about the importance of nominating, saying "A lot of their work goes unnoticed, and nominating helps the people in our community to feel valued in all their efforts.''
The awards will feature the citizen, young citizen, senior citizen and community achievement awards up for grabs. They recognise individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to the Whyalla community throughout the year or demonstrated outstanding service for a number of years and are excellent role models.
About the awards:
Community service awards recognise residents who have given outstanding service to a single organisation or field of endeavour.
The citizen, senior citizen and young citizen categories reward and recognise individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution during the past year while having regard to their previous achievements and ongoing contribution over and above normal employment duties.
Outstanding contribution and community service includes areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary service, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of the community.
To be eligible, the person must be an Australian citizen, and under 30 years of age on January 26, 2024 for the young citizen category and over 65 for the senior citizen award.
If you know someone who makes Whyalla a better place, head to the Council website to read the criteria and nominate them for an award.
Nomination forms are available here
and they close at 5pm on Sunday, December 31 2023.
