Whyalla is now in a position to host more major regional events, with the opening of a new facility at Jubilee Park for local sporting groups.

The new facility – made possible by more than $400,000 funding from the State Government, which has been matched by Whyalla City Council – includes a new amenities block, toilets and unisex changerooms.

Mayor Phill Stone said the upgrade would bring a multitude of benefits.

“By having yet another facility in the city with upgraded amenities, it increases our chances of attracting major regional events, such as sporting carnivals,” Mayor Stone said.

“This then has significant flow-on effects for the local economy due to the number of visitors that stay in the city, so it is a worthwhile investment for our community.

“Having an accessible, unisex facility also helps local associations to be more inclusive in their offerings and add to the great facilities we already have in the city.”

The Jubilee Park oval is currently used by the Whyalla Junior Soccer Association for its junior competition, as well as several Whyalla Football League clubs for training and junior matches. All agree the facility will be extremely useful to their sports by providing convenient facilities – including an undercover area that can allow for on-location fundraising – as well as enabling year-round sport, such as women’s footy.

It’s expected the new facility will be able to benefit even more sports and the broader community in the coming years, including providing accessible, DDA-compliant toilets for the upcoming Whyalla Show.

Member for Giles Eddie Hughes said he welcomed the Jubilee Park upgrade.

“Jubilee Park has been an important part of Whyalla’s sporting infrastructure for many years, so the Malinauskas Government is proud to invest in this facility, which will be welcomed by the wide range of groups who use the grounds,” Mr Hughes said.

“It will be great to see even more local groups utilising this space and reaping the benefits of the combined investment by the State Government and Council in the community.”
