Make money while helping the environment!

The annual Garage Sale Trail – Australia’s festival of pre-loved stuff – is fast approaching, so get ready to play your part, with registrations for sales now open!
A multi-award-winning community and sustainability event, Garage Sale Trail is part of Whyalla City Council’s commitment to reducing landfill and supporting residents to reuse and reduce waste at home.
Council’s Events Coordinator Ryan Sutherland said the event was dedicated to helping communities both make and save money through the sale of second-hand goods.
“We are thrilled to once again be involved with the initiative – selling or shopping at garage sales is a fun and simple action we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint and make some extra money,” Ms Sutherland said.
“Last year’s Whyalla event saw nearly 30,000 kilograms of products sold and reused, generating nearly $80,000 for locals – at an average of $663 per seller – so that’s a fantastic result for our local environment and economy.”
If you’re looking to host a sale, you can register for free at garagesaletrail.com.au/whyalla, with the event open to everyone – from households and schools, to community groups and businesses.
“With free registration, how-to guides, promotional resources and even touch-free PayPal QR code payments, it’s garage sales made easy for sellers over two big weekends,” Ms Sutherland said.
Before the sale weekends, there will be a series of online talks (Trail Tutorials) featuring an all-star cast of experts and familiar faces sharing their sustainable living tips that are kind on both planet and pocket. Featuring presenters Barry du Bois and Veronica Milsom—alongside experts in second-hand selling, styling and the circular economy—the Trail Tutorials are hosted on the Garage Sale Trail website and are free to attend.
For those looking to shop the trail, this year’s event will be held on 11-12 and 18-19 November, so keep an eye on the Garage Sale Trail website and our social channels for ongoing updates.
The Garage Sale Trail program is made possible locally thanks to the support of Whyalla City Council.
