Let’s get planting!

20 July 23

It’s that time of year again where the Whyalla community has an opportunity to green-up our city as part of National Tree Day. And to make it even better, Whyalla City Council is once again giving away FREE plants to help everyone get involved!

National Tree Day is a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and engage in environmental activities, with Council giving away trees to help encourage increased greenery right across the city.

Council is offering one native shrub for each person who comes down to the rear gate of the Ada Ryan Gardens nursery compound between 9am and 12pm on Saturday 5 August. All plants have been sourced from the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens in Port Augusta, with hundreds of plants earmarked to give away to community members.

Council staff will hand out the free native shrubs and provide valuable information on the plants, including where the best place would be to plant them in your own garden and how to care for them long-term.

‘Mystery boxes’ will also be delivered to schools and kindergartens across Whyalla in the lead-up to the event, comprising a selection of 10 native plants.

Planning for National Tree Day has been underway since this time last year, with an order placed with the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens straight after the 2022 event to ensure there would be available tube stock in the necessary quantities and of suitable size.

There will be no public access to the nursery compound on the day – the giveaway will take place at the rear gate in Ada Ryan Gardens. Residents are reminded to follow staff instructions and be patient if needing to line up – it will be worth the wait 😀🌳
