Leisure Centre Upgrade Update
14 June 2023
Whyalla City Council is continuing to review options for the maintenance and renewal upgrades on the Whyalla Leisure Centre, with tender responses quoting significantly higher costs than expected, which has delayed the start of the project.
The work went out to tender earlier this year, covering the installation of a new spa; new splash pad play area and learn to swim pool; new underfloor plumbing; plant room upgrades; removal of the slide; and re-tiling and grouting of the 25-metre pool; among other upgrades.
Mayor Phill Stone said he regretted the delays, but Council now has to review how the project is delivered before seeking further tender submissions.
“This is just the latest example of how higher costs of services are impacting on regional communities and local government,” Mayor Stone said.
“We need to ensure we return value for the community’s investment, so will look at ways to ensure the project can still be delivered within budget.
“These works will improve the facility for years to come, hopefully paving the way for larger upgrades in the future, providing we can secure the external funding required.”
