City of Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone has welcomed the exciting update from GFG Alliance Executive Chairman Sanjeev Gupta regarding the green future of his Whyalla operations. Mr Gupta announced the phase out of coal-based steelmaking at GFG’s Whyalla plant, with the signing of a supply contract for a 160-tonne, low carbon emissions electric arc furnace.

“It feels like the eyes of the world are firmly focused on Whyalla of late,” Mayor Phill Stone said.

“The major announcements continue to roll in – our future is looking increasingly stronger and more exciting by the day.

“This represents a major investment in the long-term future of the plant and therefore Whyalla, which is fantastic news not only for our community, but for all those considering investing or starting a new business in our city; or relocating for new opportunities.

“Combined with the State Government's Hydrogen Jobs Plan - which Premier Peter Malinauskas today confirmed remains on track to be completed by 2026 - this cements our credentials as a green energy powerhouse that will lead the world in renewable technologies.

"It also gives our community confidence that GFG Alliance is well advanced in transitioning away from the operations of the past, and moving towards a far cleaner, greener future, while still focusing on increased employment for our community.”
