What's the Future? Workshop

Our 'WTF - What's the Future?' journey is continuing, with the first of our community focus groups considering what they'd like Whyalla to look like and be famous for in the year 2040. There were some fantastic ideas, prompted by some inspirational speakers helping everyone think big.

We'll continue these focus groups over the coming months, using these ideas and vision to help address the priorities identified by the community at the first WTF session (full recap here: https://bit.ly/3rmAqMm).

Thank you to all the amazing community members who contributed! We'll continue to provide updates as the project progresses.

Closure of the Coke Ovens

The closure of the Coke Ovens marks a significant milestone in Whyalla's history, with the final push for the 55-year-old Coke Ovens at Liberty Primary Steel's Whyalla Steelworks. Although it's farewell to an icon, it represents a reduction in the steelworks' environmental footprint, as well as further progress in Liberty's drive towards a GREENSTEEL future. Christmas on the Avenue

At this month’s ordinary meeting, Whyalla City Council agreed to coordinate this year’s GFG Alliance Christmas Pageant, with previous organisers Apex struggling for volunteers and unable to give the pageant the attention it needs.

The tight timeframe means a different approach is required, so we will be combining the pageant with the Whyalla Community Christmas Carols to become ‘Christmas on the Avenue’, held along Nicolson Avenue and Civic Park on Saturday 9 December.

Although different to what we’ve all been used to, this will create a larger, more centrally located, and accessible event for the whole community to enjoy, hopefully creating a real festive atmosphere in the centre of the city. Without combining the events and drawing on the resources of Carols organisers, the pageant would not be able to go ahead this year.

We will seek community feedback after this year’s event to gauge the preferred format (Nicolson Avenue or City Plaza). The event management will then be passed on to community groups for next year’s event. Please read this article for full context: https://bit.ly/3PK0omv And be sure to start thinking about float ideas, with registrations opening soon – keep an eye on our socials for details.

Construction on the Black Point Staircase

As part of the Cuttlefish Coast Sanctuary Tourism and Conservation Project, there will be works on the Black Point Staircase starting on September 25.

This project involves the removal of the existing timber staircase and suppling and installing a new recycled plastic staircase complete with a sheltered viewing platform.

The schedule for these works will likely result in the new staircase installed by the end of next week, with the viewing platform to be installed two weeks later, early October, to complete these works.

We ask that the public is understanding of any temporary closures to this beach access, while these works are undertaken.
