Welcome our new Australian Citizens

This week, we held another successful Group Citizenship Ceremony, with nine Whyalla residents taking their pledge, becoming Australian Citizens!

Several significant dates have been chosen this year to hold group Citizenship Ceremonies. Last night's ceremony was chosen to take place, like so many other councils, during Refugee Week, which is a time to bring awareness and celebrate positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.

Welcome and congratulations to our latest Australian Citizens!

Grassroots Grant for Whyalla City Council

Eyre Peninsula Landscapes Board recently announced that close to $140,000 will go towards landscape management and environmental protection projects on Eyre Peninsula, under the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board’s Grassroots Grants program.

We were one of the successful recipients, receiving $5,000 of funding for the Eight-Mile Creek Beach and Murrippi Beach Saltmarsh Walking Trails project.

The funding will support the development of two short interpretive loop walking trails showcasing Temperate Coastal Saltmarsh and Mangrove ecology at Eight-Mile Creek Beach and Murrippi Beach.

Infrastructure at each site will consist of a main trail head sign to be housed in a newly installed existing sign shelter, and a series of trail markers (posts) with catchy topic headings and QR codes linking to video grabs of experts speaking to the points of interest along the trail.

To learn more about the Grass Roots Funding Program and other funded projects, visit the Landscapes South Australia EP website.

To learn more about the Saltmarsh watch the Secrets of the Saltmarsh video here.

This project is supported by the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board’s Grassroots Grants program, made possible by the regional landscape levy.

Protecting our Northern Coastline

We are currently installing a new fencing system to protect the highly valuable coastal health that is growing along the edge of the northern coastline. This will see barricades and post and chain fencing installed to close off vehicle access to the rocky beach at Garfish Bay, refer to map above.

Pedestrian access to the area will remain.

These barricades will complement the post and chain fencing being installed along the full length of Garfish Bay, from the boat ramp/harbour, to the Lighthouse Cottages.

Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act – Draft Bill

To support South Australia’s development of a world-leading hydrogen and renewable energy industry, the Department for Energy and Mining are putting a fit-for-purpose regulatory system in place, the "Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act".

This will ensure that a strong clean energy industry delivers the best outcomes for communities, respects Native Title and delivers net environmental benefit.

Based on feedback from a previous consultation on the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act Issues Paper, a draft Bill has been developed and is now open for consultation.

View the draft bill and respond at the YourSay website

Feedback closes 12pm, Monday 26 June.
