National Tree Day
It was happy faces and greener places on Saturday August 5 as we celebrated National Tree Day with a FREE plant giveaway. Hundreds of Whyalla residents braved the cold, windy conditions at the Ada Ryan Gardens, to pick from a great selection of native shrubs and groundcovers, which our amazing team was happy to provide. Here are just a few of the happy residents that grabbed a free plant on Saturday!
The Child Care Centre had a fun day celebrating National Tree Day. The kids got to learn about trees and with a special delivery of shrubs and ground covers, got to plant them around the Child Care Centre! Just look at their smiling faces .

Slide at the Jim Pollock Wetlands Playground
The slide at the Jim Pollock Wetlands playground is once again open!
Stuart Campbell from the playground team has been diligently working to make sure the slide is once again safe for use. Safety has been improved by adding additional fencing and concrete and building up the layer of bark chips surrounding the slide. Stu is passionate about keeping the playgrounds around Whyalla safe, so if you find any safety concerns with a playground you visit please let Council know via the My Local Services App or give us a call!
Thanks Stu!

Point Lowly Cottages Restoration
Restoration works on the Point Lowly Cottages are starting to make visible progress, as the long-awaited upgrade continues to take shape with local contractor McMahon Services Australia Pty Ltd leading the work. Much of the project to this point has been preparing the site for construction works, including dealing with legacy issues and stripping the interior ready for refurbishment. As can be seen from the top-down photo, concrete foundations are now in place for extensions to both cottages, while new plumbing has also been installed, including a new wastewater system (to the right of the main fence). Lighthouse Handrail Restoration
We’ve received a number of queries in relation to timeframes for work on the Point Lowly Lighthouse, which is a separate project to the Point Lowly Cottages upgrade. Rust treatment and painting on the upper section of the lighthouse was due for completion around July, however workers discovered that the lower handrail section had deteriorated beyond the point of repair (as seen in the images below), meaning a new lower handrail system (as like-for-like as possible) needs to be fabricated and installed.
Given the lighthouse is heritage listed, the work requires development approval before it can occur. This process and the unforeseen additional work have caused unexpected delays, so we now anticipate the work will be completed by the end of 2023. The fencing is in place to protect the public from the potential for falling debris, which could result from the high level of deterioration. We agree it’s not the best look, but public safety must be prioritised until the work is complete. We will continue to provide updates on progress and look forward to the lighthouse being restored to its former glory and ready for photographs.
