uneARTh your March

We had a highly successful start to the uneARTh Festival last weekend, with a great turn out for Foreshore Fridays with Jack Daw, plus a sell-out show at O’Kipos with Peter Combe.

Open Mic night was well received at the Whyalla Left Hand Club, with attendees enjoying a bite to eat from Foodnotes, before the stage was open for everyone to get up and have a go🎙

The Middleback Arts Centre also came alive with the sound of families singing along to Peter Combe's famous children’s songs, with some lucky children joining Peter on stage throughout the performance 😊

Don’t forget we have a full month of events and activations happening around the city, with this Friday featuring:

  • Foreshore Fridays with the wonderful Emma Taylor. Relax and unwind from your week with stunning vocals from Emma at our beautiful foreshore. The Seaview Café will be open for meals and drinks. At this stage, the weather looks perfect, so grab your picnic rug or chairs and head down and enjoy Foreshore Fridays
  • Do you like your Blues music? The Whyalla Left Hand Club are hosting a massive night of Blues tunes with 3 bands taking to the stage. Ray Beadle, Mojo Webb and The Streamliners will be performing in this spectacular blues guitar mini festival.

Tickets are selling well for this show, so be sure to jump online and purchase yours now, or pick one up from WDD Office Choice or the Left Hand Club.

Clean Up Australia Day a success

Thanks, Whyalla, for showing up and making a difference!

Whyalla residents stepped up last Sunday for Clean Up Australia Day, with over 100 participants cleaning up across the city.

There were lots of families, groups, clubs and businesses that registered on the day, including our Acting Mayor David Knox and Deputy Mayor Tamy Pond pitching in collecting rubbish around our city.

Also pictured are the students from Fisk St Primary School, who were just one of the educational institutions who held a clean up day during the week.

See the many smiling faces in the photos below, who each contributed to help keep the environment and Whyalla beautiful!

Thanks must go to our major sponsors for supporting this year’s efforts - Veolia, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Azzopardi Butchers, Casa De Pan.

Greening our city - irrigation installation

Oz Irrigation are currently working along Nicolson Avenue installing new irrigation to the median strips.

The team have finished installing replacement pipe work on the median strip in front of the Whyalla Secondary College (this needed to be reinstalled after it was damaged when the traffic lights were installed) and are now installing new irrigation along the median strip between Bradford Street and Rudall Avenue.

This work is part of our Greening Our City project. The irrigation install is expected to be completed this week, ready for the Open Spaces team to work their magic! They will be planting Illawarra Flame Trees in front of the school, along with seeding lawn, and will plant new Dwarf Lemon Scented Gums along the median strips between Bradford and Rudall  🌳😍

Traffic management will be in place whilst the work is being completed. We ask the public to obey the traffic management signage and reduce your speed while travelling through the area. We thank the community for their understanding while the works are in progress.

Horticulture trainees

We have recently taken on three new Horticulture Trainees, thanks to the continued partnership with Career Employment Group (CEG). The three trainees started in January and are gaining broad experience working with Open Spaces teams.

Jordan, Dewi (pictured) and Mark have been working hard across the city. Mowing, weeding, and working with the ovals and tree crew to learn the day-to-day work that these teams achieve to keep our city looking great.

Thank you Whyalla - community survey

We would like to thank the community of Whyalla for taking the time to complete the Whyalla City Council Annual Community Survey. The survey closed on Wednesday 8 March at 5pm with a record number of submission made, over 530👏

The survey responses will now be collated, and we will provide an update on the feedback received and how this will be used to identify improvements for the remainder of 2023 and beyond.
