Celebrate Cuttlefest 2023
20 June 2023
The stunning Australian Giant Cuttlefish have arrived in the coastal waters near Stony Point and it’s time to celebrate with Cuttlefest 2023 - a celebration of all things cuttlefish! There will be events happening around the city, including two big FREE community events happening in July – Light-up HMAS Whyalla and The Salty Sea‘esta being held in Ada Ryan Gardens.
Mayor Phill Stone said he is excited about this year’s Cuttlefest line-up of events.
“The unique experience of the cuttlefish coming to the coastline is something of global significance, so getting behind this annual aggregation with an offering of events for visitors and our community is really important to Council,” Mayor Stone said.
“We are thrilled to see other organisations and businesses also get on board, sponsoring and hosting their own events. Although it’s all about the cuttlefish, you don’t have to go out to the dive site to enjoy the festivities, with a host of cuttlefish-related events and activities happening in and around Whyalla.
“I’m really looking forward to the Illuminart Light-up the HMAS Whyalla and the Salty Sea‘esta event taking place in Ada Ryan Gardens - some exciting after-dark activation that is for the whole community to enjoy for free.”
If you haven’t already, now is the time to head out to the dive site and observe the cuttlefish mating ritual. This can be done both in and out of the water.
Whyalla Diving Services offer guided snorkelling and diving tours, along with the hire of equipment - snorkels, dive gear and wetsuits to keep you warm in the cold water. Head to their website to find out more.
Looking for an experience where you can stay warm and dry and view these creatures from above the surface? Jump online and check out Cuttys Glass Bottom Boat Tours. You can climb onboard the Glass Bottom Boat or book in and take an Accessible Tour onboard the ‘Top Gun.’ On both tours, you’ll hear from experienced guides with interesting facts about the cuttlefish and other marine life and the area.
EMS (Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries) will also be coming to Whyalla, offering guided snorkel tours, along with a host of other events for the 2023 Cuttlefest Season. Visit the EMS website to find out more and book your spot at one of their guided tours.
