April School Holiday Fun

20 April 2023

It’s school holidays and there are lots of fun things to see and do in our community!

The Whyalla Public Library is offering fun workshop activities and the Visitor Information Centre and Foreshore Pod have extra things for families to enjoy.

The Whyalla Public Library School Holiday Program:

The library has a jam-packed program of workshops and activities for all ages. Just some of those on offer include:

Create and Design Digitally: Using the library’s iPad or bring your own along, you will learn how to create digital drawings.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite: But first you need to make it! It’s time to mix creativity and fresh air. You will be given all you need to make and then decorate your own kite and if the weather is good, you can test it out on the lawn area outside the library.

Little Explores – Out of the Box: An activity aimed at 3–8-year-olds to do with their carer, recommended ratio 1-2 children per adult. It’s time to stop and take in the world around you. A project in collaboration with the State Library will encourage attendees to slow down and connect to explore their surroundings and engage their senses.

Paint A Galaxy: Join Richard from the Children’s University to learn all about the Universe. Then discover your creative side and learn painting techniques to create your very own galaxy to take home.

For more information on the full program, including recommended ages for the workshops and the booking links, visit the Whyalla Pubic Library’s’ Eventbrite page. If you can’t attend, please cancel your booking via Eventbrite or contact the staff on (08) 8645 7891.

Follow the Whyalla Public Library Facebook Page to keep up to date with what’s happening.

The Whyalla Visitor Information Centre and Maritime Museum:

The Maritime Museum has a fun family challenge for all to complete these holidays - The Captain’s Trail!

The Captain’s Trail will put all your observation skills to the test. On arrival, you will pick up a worksheet from the friendly staff before setting off on your journey. Using your worksheet for clues as you travel through the gardens, you’ll find the answers to complete the challenge.

A fun, captivating activity that will engage the whole family, with every child taking home a certificate and an activity pack.

The activity is FREE with paid entry into the Maritime Museum.

Entry to the Maritime Museum: Adults $15, Concession $12 per person. KIDS FREE in family groups.

The Museum is open 10-4pm every day.

Want to learn about the GFG owned Steelworks or the history of the HMAS Whyalla? Then take a Whyalla Tour!

On tour, you will hear the stories, the history, and the facts. Learn of industry, of challenges and of success.

Climb aboard a ship, explore an old miner’s cottage, and step out to view a mining site. Traverse a working steelworks site and learn of processes, ore, and steel production from the safety of a bus.

Tours for both attractions leave from the Whyalla Visitors Information Centre, enclosed shoes are required, and bookings are a must during this busy period!

HMAS tours take place daily at 11.30am and 1.30pm

Tours of the Steelworks take place on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays with the bus leaving at 9.30am.

Contact the Whyalla Visitor Centre & Maritime Museum 1800 088 589 to book a tour or for more information.

While the weather is still nice and the sun is shining, take a trip to the Visitor Information Centre Pod, located down on Whyalla’s foreshore. The VIC staff will have big games setup on the lawn in front of the pod for all to enjoy, along with a range of merchandise for sale.

The VIC pod is open Monday- Friday 9am-1pm and 10am-2pm weekends and public holidays.
