Whyalla is still buzzing after an incredibly successful first Whyalla Wings event at the Whyalla Airport on the weekend.

More than 4,000 people turned out on a perfect day for flying and family fun, with overwhelmingly positive feedback received for the action-packed event.

The day kicked off with the foreshore flyover of the Grumman Avenger by Matt from Paul Bennet Airshows, with the foreshore, jetty and Hummock Hill all packed with spectators before heading to the airport for the main event.

Whyalla City Council Director of City Growth Jade Ballantine said the attendance on Saturday was incredible.

“We are thrilled with the support received from the community and visitors to our city – it far exceeded our expectations and we want to thank all the visitors and locals for getting behind this event,” Ms Ballantine said.

“Unfortunately, this popularity created a few issues with the volume of people waiting for shuttle buses at the start of the event, so we apologise for those that had extensive wait times. This was our first time organising an event of this nature, so we appreciate everyone’s feedback which will enable us to learn from the experience and ensure measures are in place for any future events.”

Event attendee Carol Joy took to Facebook to praise the event organisers. “Awesome day, so many people of all ages thoroughly enjoyed themselves, loved the atmosphere and entertainment between the air show events… well done.”

Local Jodie Perone attended the air show with her 90-year-old grandfather who could not wipe the smile off his face.

“He couldn’t stop talking about how brilliant it was,” Mrs Perone said.

Along with the spectacular aerial aerobatics display, attendees were kept entertained on the mainstage and around the airport tarmac.

The day began with a warm Welcome to Country by Aunty Yvonne Abdulla; followed by The Three Little Sisters; local talents Whydale Calisthenics; charity plane pull (raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service); and car and motorcycle displays; all backed up by MC Lucky Sam in his pink pilot outfit, keeping the crowd amused and informed.

If you attended the event, we would love to hear your thoughts, so please take the time to complete the event survey. The data received will help inform our team and guide future planning.
