uneARTh Festival has kicked off with a bang with a number of SOLD-OUT events and overwhelmingly positive feedback 😃
Hundreds of locals and visitors flocked to the various locations across the city to check out the incredibly talented local and visiting artists, putting on a dazzling array of performances.
The weekend started with a warm-up event held at Whisk Away – an evening of glittery cocktails and crafts to get everyone in the mood for the next nine days of festival fun!
It then continued with the very popular Piano Man – Peter Hacquoil – playing the ivory keys on our iconic jetty. Peter played four sets over the weekend, proving very popular with his final set attracting a crowd of over 100 people on Sunday night. He said he “had a ball” and enjoyed playing for so many “friendly and happy” people.
The Whyalla Musician Association Inc presented the opening day and night’s events with a diverse day of music down at Smokey Uppercuts Beach, Bar and BBQ, before heading on to the Left Hand Club for the official Opening Night Big Gig.
This sold-out show included six bands offering everything from symphonic metal to country and prog synth. Whyalla Musician Association event organiser Craig Macintyre thanked everyone who supported the event and said there were some amazing performances and a great crowd, making for a really positive atmosphere.
“We’ve had some fantastic feedback – even those who came to support the country bands were blown away by the metal performances and vice versa, so it was great to see locals thoroughly enjoying such a diverse range of music,” he said.
We were then back to the foreshore for the Sunday Sesh. Local pub scene favourites Hold My Beer entertained the crowd, with bouncy castles, face painting and visiting poet Rosie from Poems4Trade providing a personal poet writing experience on her modern, traditional typewriter.
Visual Artist Jane Skeer has also been busy at the foreshore, up Hummock Hill and at the Wetlands, creating ephemeral artwork out of natural materials. Jane will be continue producing artworks today (Tuesday 22 March) so be sure to keep an eye out around our city.
