Putting Food on The Table with Foodbank
Whyalla City Council has committed to continuing its support of vulnerable people in the community by extending and expanding its partnership with Foodbank.
Council has provided Foodbank with $5,000 worth of fuel credits annually since its operation was established in Whyalla in 2010, now increasing this contribution to $10,000 for financial years 2023-2025.
Council CEO Justin Commons said Whyalla Foodbank provided an incredibly important service to the local community.
“Providing assistance to cover the fuel costs will allow Foodbank to put more food on the tables for those in our community that need this service the most,” Mr Commons said.
“We recognise the importance of the work that Foodbank achieves, so were keen to increase our commitment. Our support alone will enable Foodbank to provide 20,000 meals to people in need in our community.”
The Foodbank Warehouse in Whyalla has been operational since February 2010, with the Food Hub opening in 2020 contributing to Foodbank SA’s goal to end hunger in South Australia.
Foodbank CEO Greg Pattinson said the Foodbank Whyalla Hub supported over 5,200 vulnerable individuals last year, with the commitment from Whyalla City Council vital to support the work that Foodbank achieves in Whyalla and the surrounding region.
“Along with supporting individuals, the Whyalla branch supports 36 agencies and community groups and 15 schools and early education programs.” Mr Pattinson said.
“Last financial year, we distributed enough food to put over 550,000 meals on the table in Whyalla. This commitment from Council will help offset the rising cost of living and fuel prices, ensuring we can continue to deliver hundreds of thousands of meals to those locals doing it tough.”
