Commitment to local youth

Whyalla City Council has made a commitment to youth employment by embarking on its Career Pathways Journey. This has seen Council work with Career Employment Group and the Whyalla Secondary College to make School-Based Traineeships available for 2022.

This year’s School-Based Trainees (SBT) Tyler Olds and Dakota Knowles started their journey at the beginning of year and have now completed their qualification component of their training, being awarded their Certificate II in Resource and Infrastructure.

Council would like to acknowledge and thank the Whyalla Secondary College for supporting the SBT program; local business Career Employment Group for delivering the training; and of course the students themselves for their efforts and commitments to working for Council.

Below are just a few photos of some of the incredible work that Tyler and Dakota have completed in their time at Council, supported by their mentor Tony Steele and the Open Spaces Team.

Dakota and Tyler installed a brand-new deck at the Visitor Information Centre to make loading and unloading from the side entrance safer for everyone. They were instrumental in this project, from design, ordering materials, measuring, risk assessment and completing the build.

Dakota and Tony repaired the bush camp bench at Fitzgerald Bay Campground. Measuring, ordering the equipment and building onsite before finishing off the project with staining the seating and painting the table top.

The finished seating located out at the Fitzgerald Bay Campground.

Earlier in the year Dakota and Tyler, along with members of the council civil team laid the concrete for the netball/ basketball court at Trevan Street Park.
