AUSSIE BIRD COUNT
You’re invited to join in the 2022 Aussie Bird Count happening during National Bird Week, 17-23 October.
Make a difference for bird conservation by giving a moment of your time to count the birds that are counting on you. Participate in the Aussie Bird Count during Bird Week in October and use your observation skills for a 20-minute period to make a simple but important contribution to Birdlife Australia’s conservation initiatives.
Each year people across the country head out to their front yards, backyards, courtyards, parks and play areas to count how many birds they see to provide a snapshot of Australia’s more common bird species. It’s a fun, simple and safe activity observing nature, which is proven to provide benefits to mental health and wellbeing.
Collecting this data at the same time each year allows us to look at the trends in our bird communities over time. Think of birds as a barometer for nature, as their health and wellbeing are one of nature’s best indicators.
Download the Aussie Bird Count app and get involved or learn more at the Aussie Bird Website
And join the flock for Australia’s largest citizen science project – Aussie Bird Count.
ART DECO TOUR
The Art Deco and Modernism Society of Australia, Adelaide Chapter visited Whyalla over the October long weekend to take a tour of the Art Deco Buildings in Whyalla with tour guide, and Tourism Assets Development Officer Paul Mazourek. The visit was inspired by the recently published book ‘Whyalla Architecture: from Tents to Streamline Moderne’.
The group explored the 1940s architecture, with the special opportunity to go inside and view the interiors of the former Whyalla Technical High School and Community Band Hall historic buildings. The group also took the time to visit the Whyalla Maritime Museum.
If you are interested in Whyalla’s Art Deco buildings, you can purchase ‘Whyalla Architecture: From Tents to Streamline Moderne’ from the Whyalla Visitor Centre. Using the book, you could take your own self-guided tour!
If you are interested in going on a guided tour with Paul Mazourek, please contact Paul at Council on 8640 3444 to register your interest.
BINS FOR BLOKES
BINS4Blokes is an Australia-wide awareness and advocacy campaign promoting the installation of incontinence bins in male public toilets facilities. 1.34 million boys and men across Australia use incontinence products, and there are very few places for them to throw them out. This can make them stay put, not wanting to leave their homes and join in with everyday activities.
Council have now installed Bins4Blokes products in all male toilets serviced by council, including public and staff toilet facilities, and we are encouraging other businesses and organisations to do the same.
To find out more about BINS4Blokes, visit their website
