Whyalla Childcare Sustainable Fruit And Vegetable Garden
The Whyalla Child Care Centre educators and children have created a sustainable fruit and vegetable garden. The garden was made possible thanks to the team securing a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant. The grant has provided an opportunity for the children at the centre to learn about the life cycle of plants and eat fresh fruit and vegetables that they have grown themselves.
Whyalla Child Care Early Childhood Teacher Jo Marsland said “This project has been fantastic for our centre. We have all loved planting the plants, watering them and watching them grow. Our planter boxes are along the walkway into the centre so it is a huge talking point for all of our families and children.”
“Seeing the children and their families really engaging and discussing the fruit and vegetables as they walk into the centre has been great.
“Thanks to the grant we were also able to purchase and setup a worm farm. The children particularly enjoyed learning all about the worms. They like to gently hold them, watch them hide under the soil and then collect the ‘worm wee’ to water the plants” said Jo.
The educators and children are looking forward to watching their garden grow and enjoying their fresh produce.

Veolia – Kerbside Collection And An Upgrade To Organic Bin Lids
The 2022 kerbside collection calendars should now have arrived in your mailboxes. If you have not received one and would like a hard copy there are a limited amount available from the Council Civic Building.
You can also keep up to date on bin collection days via the My Local Services App (MLS). The MLS app provides you with a notification of when your bins are due and the type of bins you need to pop out for kerbside collection. For information on the MLS App visit the website here.
Veolia have also made us aware that there will be a slight colour change in the organic 240lt green lidded bins moving forward. The bin lid colour will, over time, be replaced to a standardised lime green colour as seen below. The new bins and lids will be provided periodically as damaged bins require repair or replacement.

New Playground Equipment Open For Use
The installation of the new playground equipment at Loring Street Reserve and Trevan Park has now been completed with both locations open for use. Residents can now enjoy some new equipment not seen in the city before, including the Aeroskate pictured below located at the Loring Street Reserve.
Further improvements to Whyallas playgrounds will continue with new equipment being installed at the Taylor Street Reserve, Jaycee Park.
The Rotary Club of Whyalla recently removing the old infrastructure and preparing it to be sent overseas as part of The Rotary Overseas Relocated Playgrounds project. A great outcome for this well-loved playground.
Works will commence on installing the new playground at Taylor Street Reserve throughout the January School Holidays.
