Another funding success for next section of bike path

Whyalla City Council Director Infrastructure Kristen Clark tests out the recently-installed shared path on the Norrie Avenue median strip.

Cyclists and pedestrians will see a further increase in safer, smoother paths thanks to continued investment by Whyalla City Council and the State Government into local cycling projects.

Whyalla will benefit from $101,000 in funding – which will be matched by council – to implement the next stage of Whyalla’s Strategic Bike Plan. This will connect existing paths between Racecourse Road, Norrie Avenue, the Wetlands and Broadbent Terrace, as well as the eastern end of the city near Hummock Hill.

The plan aims to provide the community with safer off-road, shared paths, encouraging more people to ride their bikes where possible – rather than relying on vehicles – helping improve community health and reduce the city’s impact on the environment.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said these projects would help increase physical activity levels and reduce the burden on the state’s health system.

“By providing safe riding environments, we’re helping to encourage more people to jump on their bikes, providing important health, social and environmental benefits,” he said.
