Keep on rolling
Another stage of Whyalla’s Strategic Bike Plan is nearing completion on this years’ shared bicycle paths.
This project provides the community with safer off-road shared paths for everyone from workers to schoolchildren, recreational walkers and bike riders and those who just want to leave the car at home.
The latest works have resulted in a series of smaller connectors being installed to the existing shared paths to complete the loops in the Council Strategic Bicycle Plan 2013.
The latest additions to the city’s bike pathway network include:
- Ian Street from Ekblom Street to connect with the existing path near Stratco
- Ekblom Street from the Library to Nicolson Avenue
- Russell Street from the existing path at UNISA to Flavel Street
- Flavel Street from Russell Street to Norrie Avenue
- Norrie Avenue through the centre medians from Flavel Street to Penglase Street
And for something a little different, Council has installed a section of the new shared pathway along the centre median of Norrie Avenue, where users can enjoy the shady canopy and walk or cycle amongst the trees.
Final works to be completed by mid-June 2021 include the installation of signs and line-marking along these pathways.
Planning is in progress for further shared paths south of the city to provide more off-road paths between Newton Street and Norrie Avenue.
