Iconic Jetty Wins Another Award
Whyalla’s world class jetty has collected another award, winning the Social and Community Infrastructure category at the recent Urban Development Institute of Australia, South Australia (UDIA SA) Awards for Excellence.
The judging panel for the UDIA SA Awards commended the “iconic project” that is “far more than a replacement for the previous jetty”.
“It is a community facility that is now easily accessible for the disabled. It has not only brought more visitors to Whyalla, but has helped transform the way council is thinking about how to regenerate the city, while also becoming a catalyst for more economic development in the locality,” the judges commented.
Whyalla City Council CEO Justin Commons and Director of Infrastructure Kristen Clark attended the event and accepted the award on behalf of council.
Mr Clark thanked the State Government for their support, acknowledging their investment of $1 million in funding which made this project possible.
“Thank you also to the community - we had a lot of community consultation and feedback around the design of our jetty and it was a community decision to go with the unique shape of the jetty that we have. Thanks must also go to the elected members, who at the time were brave enough - along with our Mayor - to back the delivery of a project like this,” Mr Clark said.
Mayor Clare McLaughlin was thrilled that the jetty continues to be recognised for the incredible infrastructure that it is, adding to the liveability of our city for locals and adding to the visitor experience for our visitors. The jetty is now fully enshrined into the fabric of our city and the hearts of our community.
“We can all feel proud that our jetty – whose design we chose collectively as a community - is continuing to attract the recognition that it deserves from all quarters, both far and near” Mayor McLaughlin said.

This award adds to the collection already won by the iconic Jetty. In September 2020 the jetty won the IPWEA SA’s prestigious Best Public Works Project over $5.0m and in May 2021 the jetty received LG Professional Award for Excellence in Infrastructure Delivery. As a result of winning these state awards, the jetty will now compete on the national stage. Closer to home, the jetty was also recently awarded a certificate of recognition from Whyalla Business and Tourism.
