Changes to disposal fees for Whyalla’s Waste and Resources Transfer Station
The cost to dispose of general waste at the Whyalla Waste and Resources Transfer Station (WRTS) will rise on 8 August due to increases in the State Government’s EPA Waste Levy.
This levy – which is a mandated contribution for each tonne of waste disposed, aiming to encourage greater recycling while reducing the amount of waste going to landfill – has increased by almost 150% during the past five years. The levy has been absorbed by Whyalla City Council and its WRTS operator Veolia throughout this period.
Council CEO Justin Commons said council’s significant subsidies had saved the community more than $1 million in fees over the past five years, as well as $200,000 of subsidies provided by Veolia since the WRTS opened.
“However, with more than 26,000 tonnes of material being processed annually – and with waste representing council’s single biggest cost – unfortunately this ratepayer-funded subsidy can no longer continue, so Veolia’s updated WRTS fees will now reflect the levy increases,” he said.
“We urge residents to save money by properly segregating their everyday waste and taking advantage of our free hard waste collection. If you compare us with a nearby council like Port Augusta, you will also see that our fees are either a lot less or similar, even with the increase.”
Veolia State Manager Ben Flanagan said the Waste Levy represented about 60% of the overall cost to dispose of waste.
“This is why we all need to do our bit to reduce, reuse and recycle, so that we’re sending less to landfill, which will save money, the Whyalla environment and the planet at the same time,” Mr Flanagan said.
“Our main ambition is to support the Council’s forward-thinking environmental targets – which we have been able to do at the WRTS by improving segregation – so that more items are recycled or recovered for reuse.
“We thank residents for their ongoing segregation efforts and ask them to familiarise themselves with the new disposal pricing ahead of their next visit to the WRTS.”
