Bedford Day Options success, Giving back and carpark upgrades

Published 25th August 2021
Here is a mix of stories from the week

New Bedford Facility a Hit

As proud supporters of Bedford Group Whyalla, we provided funding to assist in the establishment of their new Day Options facility, which was officially opened earlier this year. This is an incredibly important space for supporting our vulnerable young citizens, providing the opportunity for persons with a disability to participate in many exciting new activities and programs.

As you can see from the photos, participants are already enjoying the new programs aimed at assisting them in achieving personal goals, whilst meeting their needs in both recreational and developmental activities. Programs are based around building social skills, improving confidence and self‐esteem, and promoting independence.

A day in the facility is entirely what the participant would like it to be, and to see the enjoyment on the faces of the participants demonstrates how truly valuable this new facility is.

Show Ticket Surprise

We provided 30 Whyalla Show passes this year to some of Whyalla’s vulnerable community members.  Council’s Community Services Co-ordinator Ann Ryan dropped by Gabmididi Manoo Children’s Centre, Smith Family, Whyalla Special Education School, Bedford Industries, and Mission Australia to donate the tickets. All of the community groups were surprised by the pop in visit in the lead up to the show, putting a smile on many faces 😀

Planning for the future

We’re working together with Stallard Meek – Flightpath Architects and the YMCA to develop a site masterplan at the Whyalla Health and Leisure Centre.

This masterplan will allow us to gain a clear plan to move forward with ensuring that the views of the community have been included. You can have your say by participating in a short 2-3 minute online survey, which will help feed information into the upcoming masterplan.

This survey is an opportunity for the community to express what they currently love about the centre, as well as anything they’d like to see. You can access the survey via Survey Monkey online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CXPK62Y or by scanning the QR code below. The survey will run for three weeks, closing at COB 10/09/21.

Norrie Avenue Carpark Revamp

Our Open Spaces team has been working hard to breathe new life into the carpark on Norrie Avenue.  The beautification of this main throughfare will include irrigation, planting, and concrete borders to redefine the garden beds and parking areas.

Open Spaces Coordinator Matt Rotherham said, “The works will bring a tired area back to life and add kerb appeal to one of the main roads in Whyalla. The team takes great pride in their work, knowing that the community appreciate the work they are doing.”

Work will continue in the coming weeks, with concrete and irrigation works to be completed, followed by the planting.

The work is expected to provide an ‘oasis’ in what was previously a barren, grey space, improving the view for people travelling, working, and living along Norrie Avenue.
