Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from Whyalla residents and local sporting groups who would like to join the inaugural Whyalla Sports Advisory Group.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team working collaboratively with Council to steer the ongoing development of Whyalla sports ovals and facilities.
“Council are looking for members of the community and local sporting organisations who have skills in areas such as facilities management, finance, marketing, events and governance. They will work with Council to assist in the future direction of Whyalla’s sport ovals and facilities to ensure maximum community benefit” said Mayor Clare McLaughlin.
“We have some fantastic sporting facilities here in Whyalla and we want to make sure that we they are used to their full potential. We see this Advisory Group having an important role to play in looking at our sporting assets in a holistic fashion and working collaboratively to achieve some positive outcomes for our community.”
With representatives from Council, local sporting groups and independent community members, the Advisory Group will assist in determining the future management direction of Bennett Oval, Memorial Oval and Jubilee Park ovals.
Acting CEO, Kristen Clark, said that the role of the Advisory Group will be to assist with day to day management of the facilities; provide recommendations to Council on other potential uses for the three precincts; and to assist with any future major events at these facilities. The group will work towards developing Whyalla’s ovals and facilities to fully realise the community investment.
“Council is keen to explore ways to utilise our existing assets in a way that allows maximum return on investment and achieves outcomes for our community. The recent AFL game at Bennett Oval between Port Power and the Bulldogs attracted close to 5,000 spectators (pre-covid), with the economic benefits from this game flowing into our city and region. This group will play a vital role in attracting other events to the city.”
Mr Clark is encouraging Whyalla residents who understand the needs of sport in Whyalla, have the appropriate skillset and the ability to think outside the square to register an expression of interest.
Community members interested in becoming an Advisory Group member are encouraged to ring Council’s STARCLUB Field Officer, Alberto Salatino, on 8640 3444 to discuss in further detail.
Expressions of interest can be emailed to council@whyalla.sa.gov.au before 5pm Friday 5 June 2020.
