Whyalla City Council is working with the National Desexing Network (NDN) and Dr Mustafa Bozkurt Veterinary Clinic to continue and expand a subsidised desexing and microchipping program.
Previously, the program offered subsidised desexing of cats to help alleviate the problem of undesexed cats breeding and contributing to the stray cat population in Whyalla.
This year, Council has extended the program to include dogs and is also offering discounted microchipping if done with desexing.
Microchipping became mandatory effective from 1 July 2018, so this is an opportune time to add discounted microchipping along with the desexing of your pet.
Council Acting CEO, Kristen Clark, said the program was designed to help those that might struggle to afford the regular desexing and microchipping fees.
“This fantastic program will assist residents experiencing financial hardship to desex and microchip their pets,” Mr Clark said.
“Desexing not only helps to ensure fewer unwanted and homeless animals, but research shows that desexed animals can actually live longer and healthier lives. Desexing your pet can also reduce the risk of some potentially serious health problems. So this initiative really is a win for the owner, the pet and the community” said Mr Clark.
Eligible residents who take advantage of this program can also have their pets microchipped at the same time for only $10.
“Should your pet go missing, you are far more likely to be reunited if he or she is microchipped” said Mr Clark.
If you are eligible for this program, the fees for desexing are:
Cats |
| Dogs |
|
Female cat | $90 | Female dog | $120 |
Male cat | $55 | Male dog | $90 |
Additional female cats | $55 |
Microchipping is $10 if done with desexing.
This initiative is part of Council’s proactive animal management approach, and these heavily discounted fees are made possible by a Council subsidy.
The service is being kindly provided by Dr Mustafa Bozkurt Veterinary Clinic and only available until the funding is exhausted.
Council reminds residents that there are discounted annual registration fees for pets that have been desexed and microchipped.
Access to this program is only available to Whyalla residents who are holders of a valid concession card.
Residents in need of support must phone the National Desexing Network on 1300 368 992 to determine eligibility. Vouchers are issued to Council and available for collection by the resident only.
Vouchers cannot be obtained from the vet clinic.
