Mayor McLaughlin continues as LGA Board Director
Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin continues to represent the city as a Director on the Local Government Association of South Australia Board.
The Local Government Association (LGA) is a voluntary membership organisation via which councils across the State unite together with a single voice for the common good.
The LGA works in three keys areas: leadership and advocacy, capacity building and sustainability, and best practice and continuous improvement
All of the 68 councils in South Australia are members.
Mayor McLaughlin joins Mayors from the City of Charles Sturt, District Council of Tumby Bay, City of Prospect, Naracoorte Lucindale Council, Regional Council of Goyder, Alexandrina Council, City of Salisbury, City of Port Adelaide Enfield and the City of Onkaparinga on the LGA Board of Directors.
This is the second consecutive two-year term on the LGA Board for Mayor McLaughlin, working collaboratively with other Board Directors to manage the activities of the LGA.
Mayor McLaughlin is also a member of the SA Regional Organisation of Councils (SAROC) Committee, focusing on regional advocacy, policy initiation and review, leadership engagement and capacity building in the regions.
The SAROC is a committee of the LGA, representing the collective voice of regional councils.
These two leadership roles ensure City of Whyalla plays a key role in shaping state and federal government policy, and the local government sector’s strategies and service delivery to support communities across the state.

Whyalla projects receive Regional Arts funding
Three Whyalla art projects have recently secured over $34,000 in Regional Arts funding:
Michal Hughes – $6,700 ‘Walking Home’
Whyalla creators Michal Hughes and Richard Parker will interview local residents about their connection to Whyalla. The resulting stories will be collated into an app that will allow tourists and locals to listen to site-specific stories of Whyalla.
Richard Parker - $15,000 ‘Unbroken’
Filmmaker and animator Richard Parker will design and facilitate a series of visual arts workshops for participants with a lived experience of domestic abuse and family violence. The workshop processes will create a forum for mutual learning and will result in an exhibition to raise awareness about these issues.
D’faces of Youth Arts – $12,323 ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’
Young people from D’faces of Youth Arts drama and film groups will work with professional artsworkers from the film and media industry to create an interactive and innovative media project. A key outcome of the project will be a film, to be screened at various events, allowing young, regional artists the opportunity to showcase their skills to their peers and community.
Deb Hughes, Whyalla Council’s Arts and Cultural Facilitator, said that her role has made a huge difference to both the number and variety of groups applying (and winning) grant applications and creating projects for our local artists to make work, share skills and work collaboratively.
