Whyalla ANZAC Day broadcast

Published 21st April 2020
Special ANZAC Day service will be held

Whyalla residents will be able to watch and listen to a special local ANZAC Day Dawn Service, broadcast live via Facebook and 5YYY.

This year’s dawn service will have only five participants, including RSL representatives and Whyalla Mayor, Clare McLaughlin, representing the people of Whyalla.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, members of the public are not permitted to attend and there will be no chairs available.

“This year is like no other due to coronavirus and the social distancing rules. But people can still take part in the commemoration of our ANZAC’s by paying their respects from their driveways and either listening to the 5YYY service or watching the Facebook stream,” said Mayor McLaughlin.

“It’s very important that we continue to observe the social distancing rules, but that doesn’t mean we can’t all observe the rising of the sun together,” she said.

The dawn service will be broadcast live from the Memorial Gates from 6am.

“ANZAC Day is very important to the people of Whyalla, every year a huge crowd attends the Dawn Service. This year will be very different, but we will all be together, just in a different way”.

ANZAC Day 2020 services and marches have been cancelled across the nation due to the global outbreak of COVID-19.

There will be no march from the RSL Clubrooms to the Memorial Oval gates this year and the Whyalla RSL will be closed on ANZAC Day.

ANZAC banners have again been put up along Nicolson Avenue, reminding people of the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers.

The Whyalla RSL has advised that members of the public are able to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph, during the day, provided they adhere to social distancing requirements.

“This ANZAC Day will be like no other, but we can still reflect and remember the sacrifices made for this country,” said Mayor Clare McLaughlin.

Triple Y will be using broadcasting the service live on their Facebook page (Triple Y) @. People can tune into 107.7 and listen to the service if they haven’t got Facebook.
