End Road Work

Whyalla City Council advises motorists and residents that safety upgrades have now been completed at two major roundabouts.

Work on the roundabouts commenced in February, with the final stages of works including bitumen and line marking completed recently.

The two roundabouts are:

  • Nicolson Avenue and McDouall Stuart Avenue (Westlands) roundabout;
  • Jenkins Avenue and McDouall Stuart Avenue roundabout.

Council’s Project Engineer, Tim Bayly, would like to acknowledge the community for its patience whilst these works have been undertaken.

“We realise that works of this magnitude cause disruption to our road users and we would like to thank motorists for their understanding and patience during these upgrades” Mr Bayly said.

Mr Bayly advised that changes have been made to the roundabouts to increase safety by reducing entry speeds, improving traffic flow and reducing the risk of failure to give way.

The Westlands roundabout has been reconfigured and now features “LEFT LANE MUST TURN LEFT” signage at each entry.

Drivers are reminded to approach the Westlands roundabout with caution as the traffic flow is now different.

Motorists entering the Westlands roundabout from the left lane must turn left.

Motorists intending to continue straight or turn right must enter the Westlands roundabout from the right-hand lane.

Entry lanes into the Jenkins Avenue and McDouall Stuart Avenue roundabout remain unchanged.

Design work was carried out by experienced traffic engineering consultants who considered crash history, Australian Standards and guidelines, and road use by community to improve safety for road users.

The modifications to these roundabouts ensure a lower entry speed, better flow through the roundabout and a safer outcome for our community.

Council urges the community to traverse the roundabouts safely and follow the signage and line marking.
