Several Council departments have combined for an environmental win and literary bonus for locals and visitors to our city.
The Whyalla Public library had run out of options for books no longer required. To keep the library selection fresh and up to date, it runs $1 sales for books and gives many away.
Still faced with more than 40 boxes of books after numerous sales and give-aways, Council Civil Works staff member Zane Daniels stepped in and worked with the Visitor Centre with some ideas to reuse the books.
The result was a bunch of books going down to the Point Lowly Lighthouse Cottages for visitors to read, a book exchange hub at the visitor centre and another selection of books that will be offered to various community-run op shops and nursing homes. Any that are unusable here in Whyalla will be taken to Adelaide to the larger op shops and book exchanges.
Visitor Operations Coordinator, Teresa Coles said the book action will a good-news story that will also save Council and the community money.
“From a bunch of books we couldn’t find a home for, we now have three boxes of books that will go to the cottages that can be used by guests as they relax on their holidays,” Teresa said.

GOOD SELECTION: Some of the books for the book exchange hub and Pt Lowly cottages.
“We also have four of five boxes ready to be displayed in the Book Exchange Hub where visitors and locals can find a book they like and leave behind one they have already read from their own collection.
“They are also welcome to take a book or two with them to exchange at their next location.”
Teresa said many of the foreign language books in the collection would be ideal for the bigger op shops in the city.
“We are still, however, on the lookout for any children’s books that could be left at the cottages for children to enjoy.”
Donations of children’s books can be dropped off at the Visitor and Information Centre, on Lincoln Highway, seven days a week or left in the pigeon hole.
