The work volunteers do within our community is recognised by the Whyalla City Council.
Mayor Clare McLaughlin paid tribute to the 38 volunteers who work across a range of Council departments.
“Volunteers make a huge difference to our community,” said Ms McLaughlin.
“We are so very grateful for all they do.”
National Volunteer Week is being held 18-24 May. This year’s theme is ‘Changing communities. Changing lives.’
Mayor McLaughlin said volunteers make a significant contribution and their impact really does make a difference to our community.
“From the friendly volunteers who help tourists at the Visitor Centre to those who assist in the Child Care Centre, their contribution is invaluable”.
“Due to COVID-19 we can’t celebrate the way we normally would, with a morning tea, so this year we have sent a letter of thanks and a certificate of appreciation to our many volunteers,” said Mayor McLaughlin.
There are 38 active volunteers at Whyalla City Council. They provide voluntary work in these areas:
- Ada Ryan Gardens
- Cemetery
- Child Care Centre
- Library
- Visitor Centre (Model Railway)
- Accessible Beach Program
- Youth Advisory Committee
“Our volunteers spend a number of hours volunteering for the greater good of our community. COVID-19 has put their activities on hold for now, but we are looking forward to welcoming them back when it is safe to do so,” said Mayor McLaughlin.
In the latest research, Australian volunteers in 2017 provided 12.3 million hours, worth $477.5million.

“The benefits from volunteering are two-fold, it provides our community with incredible benefits but it’s also extremely satisfying for the individual volunteers” said Mayor McLaughin.
