Nicolson/Hincks upgrade complete

Published 6th May 2020
Whyalla City Council advises motorists and residents that safety upgrades have now been completed at the intersection of Nicolson and Hincks Avenues.

Work on the intersection commenced in February, with the final stages of works including bitumen and line marking completed recently.

The safety upgrades were recommended as part of the Motor Accident Commission (MAC) Local Government Association (LGA) Road Safety Fund, an Australian Government initiative that directly targets improvements to the safety of Australian roadways with proven crash history or that are high risks locations.

The program is a vital part of South Australia’s commitment to improving road safety and reducing road crashes and trauma on roadways.

Consultants were engaged to carry out assessments of crash history and intersection detail to identify potential improvements for each intersection.

Detailed crash history indicated the majority of crashes were between vehicles turning right from Hincks and those travelling straight on Nicolson.

Safe Intersection Site Distance (SISD) was also not adequate for a “GIVEWAY” signed intersection.

The width of Hincks roadway was unsafe for pedestrians with no refuge in the centre.

Design work was carried out by experienced traffic engineering consultants who considered crash history, Australian Standards and guidelines, and road use by the community to improve safety for road users and pedestrians.

Relocation of the holding line and changing to a “STOP” signed intersection improved the Safe Intersection Site Distance and meets Australian guidelines, it also improves safety for road users.

Construction of concrete islands on Nicolson supports this change and provides further safety for road users.

Council thanks residents for their patience whilst these safety upgrades were being undertaken.
