Whyalla Council’s Mount Laura Waste and Resource Recovery Centre will be closing its gates to the public for the last time as the city transitions to a new model of waste management and disposal.
All waste services will be provided via Veolia’s new purpose-built waste transfer station located in the Whyalla Industrial Estate at 41 Industrial Drive, Whyalla Barson.
The closure of the Mount Laura Waste and Resource Recovery Centre has been on the horizon since Council’s decision to award a ten-year contract to Veolia Environmental Services for waste management and disposal in Whyalla.
After an extensive tender process, Veolia was awarded the waste management contract and a $250,000 grant from the State Government through Green Industries SA has assisted in the construction of the new waste transfer station.
Construction on the $7m purpose-built Waste and Resource Transfer Station commenced in September 2019.
The new Transfer Station is designed to improve material segregation and landfill diversion by recovering materials more efficiently.
It will also ensure the safe and compliant treatment of waste and recyclables generated within the local region.
The build of the new waste transfer facility means the closure of the Mount Laura Waste and Resource Recovery Centre (landfill site).
With the new Transfer Station ready to open on Monday 20 July, both sites will run concurrently until the Mount Laura landfill shuts its gates to the public for the last time at close of business on Friday 7 August.
Running both sites for an overlap period allows Council to continue winding down its Mount Laura landfill operations, enables Veolia to work through any potential teething problems at the new site, and most importantly provide a seamless transition and continuing service for residents.
The Mount Laura Waste and Resource Recovery Centre’s last day of operation is Friday 7 August.
The new Waste and Resources Transfer Station is located in Whyalla’s Industrial Estate, at 41 Industry Drive, Whyalla Barson.
There is no change to the kerbside collection service and Cleanaway has the contract to collect kerbside waste until 2021.
