Green waste from Whyalla City Council’s kerbside green bins is making a comeback in the form of compost, to be sold locally.
Peats Soil & Garden Supplies, which opened its compost and renewable energy manufacturing site at Council’s Mount Laura Waste and Resource Recovery Centre in 2019, is currently testing the compost material which will soon be for sale through Whyalla Sand and Metal and Whyalla Garden Centre.
Acting CEO, Whyalla City Council, Mr Kristen Clark, said Whyalla residents have really taken to the concept of keeping their green bins ‘compost-friendly’.
“Whyalla residents have adopted the FOGO message – food and garden organics only in their green bins,” said Mr Clark.
Peats Soil & Garden Supplies is currently screening 1500-2000m3 of finished compost material at the landfill made from Council kerbside greens.
Mr Clark reminded residents not to put anything in their green bins that could contaminate the compost.
“The message is simple, if it’s been alive then it’s fine to put it in the green bin. So, plants, branches, food scraps are all good.”
“It’s really important to keep plastics out of the green bins. By keeping the green bins ‘clean’ we will be producing high quality water saving mulch and compost products,” he said.
“These products save water as they hold water in the soil. They improve the soil health which aids plant health and growth rates by adding missing nutrients.”
Cleanaway, who empty the household green kerbside bins, are currently advising residents by letterbox drop if their bins contain contaminated products.
