With the traditional Anzac Day services and marches cancelled this year, showing your respect on Anzac Day will be a little different in 2020.

Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin is urging residents to stand at the end of their driveways this Saturday, April 25, and light up the dawn.

“This year is like no other due to coronavirus and the social distancing rules. But people can still take part in the commemoration of our ANZACs by paying their respects from their driveways”.

Mayor McLaughlin is encouraging residents to share their Anzac tributes and stories to Council’s facebook page.

“It’s a meaningful way to see how others in our community have chosen to commemorate this special day.  Council’s facebook page has instructions on how to make ‘pop-up poppies’, these activities are family friendly and a great way to involve the younger generation.  It would be a wonderful symbol of respect to see these pop-up poppies on fences and letterboxes across Whyalla.”

“Driveways at Dawn is a way for our community to participate in Anzac Day commemorations from the safety of their own homes in a safe and meaningful way. It’s an opportunity to reflect and remember those who gave their lives.  It’s a way for us to feel connected on this special day of remembrance” Mayor McLaughlin said.

Community radio station Triple Y in conjunction with the Whyalla RSL and Whyalla City Council, will be broadcasting the dawn service LIVE from the Memorial Gates.

The service, with five people in attendance, will also live stream on Triple Y’s facebook page.

Due to the Coronavirus restrictions people are asked to NOT attend in person.

The service will start at 6am and run for approximately 20 minutes.

The Anzac Day Dawn Service booklet is available to download for those who would like to follow the service in real time.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Anzac Day services across South Australia will be closed to the public as the Federal Government enforces limits on outdoor gatherings.
