Three worthy community organisations have scored much-needed funds in the latest round of Council’s Community Grants.

The Whyalla Bowling Club, Whyalla Players Inc and Rotary Club of Whyalla shared a total of $13,932.50 in the last round of grants for this financial year. They were the only three applications received in this round.

The Community Grants Budget had an allocation of $55,000 per annum for 2018-19 with six grant rounds during the year.

Mayor Clare McLaughlin congratulated the organisations that were successful in obtaining funds in this latest round and encouraged all not-for-profit community groups to consider putting in a submission for the next round.

“This funding helps community groups to hold events and activities, buy new equipment or make improvements to their facility,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“These community groups play an important role in promoting a vibrant and engaged community and we’re proud to help with this grant process.”

SUCCESSFUL GRANT SUBMISSIONS

Rotary Club of Whyalla Inc $5000: Requested $5000 to hold a Science and Engineering Challenge. The Challenge is a nationwide STEM outreach program conducted by the University of Newcastle in partnership with communities, Rotary clubs and Universities. Students from years 7 to 10 compete in school teams, participating in a series of exciting activities that demonstrate the varied and practical elements of science and engineering industries. The Challenge takes students out of the classroom and provides them with a memorable experience. The Challenge aims to inspire students to consider pursuing future science and engineering careers by selecting science and mathematics subjects in years 11 and 12. This one will take place at the Whyalla Recreation Centre on 31 July and 1 August 2019.

Whyalla Bowling Club Inc $3932.50: Requested $3,932.50 towards the installation of ancillary works to install new seating, at the far side of the bowling‐green, to cater for the increase in patronage. The club is seeing an increase in community groups accessing the facility for social bowls in addition to an increase in membership. Due to the age of the current facilities, the club experiences significant costs in keeping the clubroom and grounds to a high standard which has an impact to their on‐going budget.

Whyalla Players Inc. $5000: Requested $5,000 to perform Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at Middleback Theatre from 29 August to 31 August 2019. The Whyalla Players Inc. aims to provide a full and rich live theatre experience to the Whyalla community and the broader region. Theatrical and cultural performances are rare opportunities for people in the region to be in a professional high‐quality show and provides an opportunity for community members to access musical theatre outside Adelaide without the costs associated with travel.
