WELCOME FUNDS: The Whyalla Hockey Association received $3000 to go towards new female-friendly changerooms.
Four community groups will move forward with their respective projects after winning funding from the City of Whyalla’s Community Grants Program.
A total of $6000 in funding was approved by Council’s elected members at the August ordinary meeting after considering the July applications.
The elected members approved the following funding:
$3000: Whyalla Hockey Association Inc (New female friendly changerooms)
$1000: Whyalla Blue Light School Holiday Program
$1000: Operations Flinders (Whyalla Chapter Yankaninna Camp – March 2020)
$1000: Plaza Youth Centre Inc. (Respect Yourself, Respect Your Community)
Whyalla CEO Chris Cowley said it was one of the more satisfying functions of Council to award this funding to worthwhile community clubs and their projects.
“The Community Grants Program goes right to the core of what a Council can do for the community and what those groups do for the community,” Chris said.
“We have so many great community groups that do so much for our city on a volunteer basis while raising their own funds.
“This assistance from Council is a thank you from everyone in the city for the work and the wonderful projects and events these groups are responsible for.”
The Community Grants Budget has an allocation of $55,000 per annum. Applications for the next round of funding close on September 15. For more information go to http://www.whyalla.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=812 or ring Jenny Barnes on 8640 3444.
August Grant Allocation
Whyalla Hockey Association - $3000
Requested funding assistance to develop new female toilet facilities to provide unisex change rooms
incorporating toilets and showers, baby changing room and umpires change room. While
the club currently has male and female toilets they are in very poor condition and do not
meet the demands associated with the increased number of people utilising the complex.
The total project cost of the new facility is $375,400 and whilst the Hockey Association has
secured State Government funding of $360,000 there is shortfall of around $15,000.
Whyalla Blue Light - $1000
Requested funding towards a School Holiday Program. Due to the spike in youth related
crime the Blue Light Committee is organising a series of activities during the September
School holidays for youth aged between 10‐17 years. Four events will be held including,
attending the road safety centre for a lesson on bike safety, attending Bowland Whyalla to
undertake glow ten pin bowling, attending a movie at Middleback Theatre and a Lazer Tag
session.
Operation Flinders - $1000
Requested funding towards the Yankaninna Camp in March 2020. The project aims to take ten
young Whyalla people, who have been identified as being ‘at‐risk’ to an Operations Flinders
camp. Operations Flinders aims to transform young people’s lives through their participation
in a world leading evidence‐based outback intervention program. The program provides
young men and women who have been identified as being ‘at‐risk’, with demanding outdoor
challenges and ongoing support, to help them develop their personal values of self‐esteem,
motivation, leadership, teamwork and responsibility, so they may grow as valued members
of the community.
Plaza Youth Centre - $1000
Requested funding towards Respect Yourself, Respect Your Community project. The project
plans to engage ‘at‐risk’ youth in developing self‐respect/self‐worth and to respect the
community. The project will run over a twelve month period and will consist of the
introduction of a passport system whereby the participants will meet various objectives
within the areas of schooling, community, recreation, self‐esteem, social skills,
communication, problem solving, identity/culture, skills, strengths, goals and self‐worth.
Each category will have goals and as the participant reaches those, the participant will have
their passport stamped. The program will also consist of formal group dinners and
incentives as participants achieve goals.
