Whyalla is awash with art with a range of exhibitions and activities throughout the month of April.

It kicks off tomorrow (Saturday, March 30) with the Sanguinity art and music event at the Sempre Café. Next Friday (April 5) sees the launch of the Whyalla Art Group’s Autumn Exhibition on Darling Street and then it’s out to Wild Dog Hill for artists to take part in Drawing on Country on Saturday (April 6).

SANGUINITY

Organised by local artist Leith O’Malley, Sanguinity (Live Art, Music and You) is a group exhibition of new artworks being launched on at Sempre Café on Forsyth St. The exhibition will be opened during the afternoon by Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin and will include live acoustic entertainment by some of Whyalla's best musicians including Paul Handley, Ben Golding, Brie Ryan and Kylie O’Malley.

Artists Chelsea Nichol Andrew, Frances Hill, Karl James Leith O’Malley will be actively painting or drawing beneath the sun filtered vines at the front of the café while there will be chalk available for kids to draw on the pavement outside the café.

“We planned very early on that the artworks be reflective of the general feeling in the Whyalla community at present, Sanguinity means cheerfully optimistic, hopeful, or confident,” Leith said.

“It also refers to the colour red … the art is intended to reflect this.

“We've done this successfully in the past and it brings a kind of European flavour to the proceedings, with the combination of both live art and live music … Oh and good coffee I might add.”

The Sanguinity launch goes from 9am to 2pm.

AUTUMN EXHIBITION

The Whyalla Art Group will kick off its Autumn Exhibition at 7pm on Friday April 5 in the art gallery on Darling Terrace.

The group says there will be a wide range of styles, techniques and mediums on display, something for everyone at the launch and throughout the exhibition with runs throughout the month of April.

“Come along and bring your friends, enjoy the evening and chat to some of the artists,” a spokesperson from the group said.

“All exhibition paintings are new works by our members, there will be light refreshments on the launch night and a gold coin donation is always appreciated.”

The Whyalla Art Gallery is open on Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 3pm and Saturday from 11am to 1pm with free entry.

DRAWING ON COUNTRY

On Saturday, April 6, it is the second Drawing on Country (where art meets environment) session in Whyalla after the first successful event on the foreshore last year.

Council Art and Cultural Facilitator Deb Hughes said this session at Wild Dog Hill was a chance for artists, of all levels, to interpret our local landscape. Artist Jane Skeer will be on hand to give advice and encouragement from 10am to 4pm.

“We’re calling all artists in all art forms to come join us and create and share your practice, it’s not just for painters,” Deb said.

“We will be developing some performance art, sculpture as a response to our environment with a view to a SALA exhibition.”

Artists need to register at deborah.hughes@whyalla.sa.gov.au. Those attending will meet at the Whyalla Conservation Park carpark. Contact Deb Hughes on 8640 3444 if your require assistance with transport.
