OFF LIMITS: The marina swimming enclosure is closed until the completion of the new jetty.
Tuesday, November 12, 2019
The City of Whyalla would like to remind residents and visitors that the swimming enclosure in the marina is closed for the duration of the new jetty construction.
The swimming enclosure, and the regular breakwater access to it, is included in the designated construction site of the new jetty which is off limits to the public. Swimming in the marina, outside of the swimming enclosure, is forbidden at all times.
Council’s Director Infrastructure, Kristen Clark said it was unfortunate the swimming enclosure would be closed this summer but it was a necessary measure to ensure the safety of everyone.
“The swimming enclosure is now in an area where heavy machinery, major construction work, including earthmoving and large boulders, is happening,” Mr Clark said.
“Along with the fact the regular access to the enclosure is off limits, and you can’t legally enter the area, it is simply too dangerous to have people swimming in a designated construction site.”
Mr Clark said Council had received reports of people swimming across the marina to get to the swimming enclosure.
“This is dangerous on many levels with the risk of injury from boats, the hazard it presents for boaties and the potential problems people may get into when swimming across the marina,” Mr Clark said.
“We don’t want to fine people for this illegal and dangerous practice so we ask people to please be patient and not use the swimming enclosure while the jetty is being built.
“There is plenty of room on the foreshore beach to have a swim in a safe and friendly environment that is patrolled by the Whyalla Surf Lifesaving Club on the weekends.”
The jetty is expected to be finished in the first half of next year.
The Whyalla Surf Lifesaving Club patrols the foreshore on weekends and public holidays between now and Easter from 9am to 1pm. Anyone interested in joining the club can call 8645 3499 or come down to the club on Sunday practice mornings from 10am until midday or on any day the patrols are present.
