Whyalla and its iconic landmarks continue to light up for South Australia’s History Festival.
To help celebrate the statewide history festival, the Whyalla Visitor and Information Centre has scheduled 6pm sunset tours of the HMAS Whyalla on Tuesday and Thursday nights throughout May. Tours are run regularly during the day but these special insights to the iconic landlocked ship take on a whole new aspect when the sun goes down.
The HMAS Whyalla, the first ship built in the Whyalla Shipyards in 1941, is an exhibit of the Whyalla Maritime Museum. It stands high and dry, two kilometres from the sea and two metres off the ground on the northern entrance to the city.
Visitor Centre Team Leader Teresa Coles said the staff were excited about conducting the HMAS Whyalla Sunset Tours. The ship is floodlit on the outside and has lighting throughout the interior.
“Doing a tour of the ship in the evening and night time is a whole different atmosphere,” Teresa said.
“The fading light creates a different feel on the ship that you just have to experience and even capture with photos.
“It’s an opportunity that we don’t often have and when we have a beautiful sunset it makes it even more special watching it from the deck of the ship.”
The HMAS Whyalla is part of the Whyalla Maritime Museum and located next to the Whyalla Visitor and Information Centre on Lincoln Highway. Places on the HMAS Whyalla Sunset Tours, which start at 6pm, can be booked by calling the centre on (08) 8645 7900 or toll free 1800 088 589 or email visitor.centre@whyalla.sa.gov.au
Cost: Adult $12.00; Concession $10.00; Child $7.00; Family (2 adults & 2 children) $31.00; extra children $6.00
Access to the ship is by guided tour only and ship tours may be restricted or modified in extreme weather conditions. Access requires being able to traverse stairs and ladders.
