Liberty Primary Steel has asked the City of Whyalla to pass on the following information regarding a smell coming from the steelworks operation.
The following is its statement issed on Wednesday, June 26, 2019:
Liberty Primary Steel (LPS) wishes to advise residents that its operations have been the cause of an unpleasant odour experienced by east Whyalla residents across the past 24 hours.
The odour coincided with an essential clean‐out and transfer of material from a section of the Steelworks’ gas main. This work was planned in conjunction with other site stoppages and has unfortunately occurred during mostly still wind conditions, allowing odour from the activity to impact on residents.
LPS sincerely apologises to the community for the odour and any impact it has had on residents. It has taken immediate steps to minimise the effect during the remainder of the activity, which is expected to conclude by Thursday morning. Further methods are now also being investigated to prevent a future re‐occurrence.
LPS recognises that odours from the Steelworks occasionally impact on the community under certain weather conditions, and will continue to take steps to minimise such events.
Should any residents have concerns or queries regarding the performance of our operations, please contact Community & Stakeholder Engagement Advisor Denise Sharp on 0447 039 358 or email denise.sharp@gfgalliance.com.
