SPRUCED UP: The new street art at the Risk It Skate Park.

Preparations are well underway for Whyalla’s big Skate Day this month.

To help celebrate SA Youth Week, Whyalla’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is holding a Skate Day at the Risk It Skate Park in Civic Park on Sunday, April 14. The YAC team has been super busy in the lead-up with a huge clean-up and fix-up at Civic Park and some cool new street art commissioned especially for the big day.

The main feature of the day will be a Skate Park Leagues (SPL) competition that is open to everyone with registrations on the day. The SPL is an interconnected skate park competition series that offers local youths who skateboard, BMX and scooter ride, a chance to showcase their skills while promoting positive use of council skate parks and skate park culture.

Adding to the free-admission Skate Day will be heaps more activities, entertainment and stuff to see. There will be a performance from the Dusty Feet Mob Dancers, 3-on-3 basketball, a photo booth, bouncy castle, giant maze, henna tattoos and a sausage sizzle.

TOO DEADLY: The Dusty Feet Mob Dancer will be performing at the Skate Day.

Newly-elected YAC Mayor Emily Rawlings said members of the youth committee had been flat out over the past couple of weeks bringing the event together while cleaning and fixing up areas of Civic Park and the skate area.

“We’ve cleaned up a lot of the graffiti, fixed the basketball backboard and rings and given the whole area a general tidy-up,” Emily said.

“We then engaged a local street artist Dylan to come along and put down a couple of cool pieces of street art.

“We’ve already had kids riding by while Dylan was working and yelling out how ‘rad’ and ‘sick” the artwork is.

“We do something to celebrate Youth Week every year and this Skate Day is going to one of the coolest events we’ve ever done.”

The free-admission Skate Day starts at 10.45am on Sunday, April 14 at the Risk It Skate Park in Civic Park on Nicolson Avenue and goes through to 5pm. It is proudly sponsored by SA Youth Week, headspace, City of Whyalla and Centacare.
