WHYALLA PROUD: Michael Brown with the Whyalla logo for his Whyalla Earthworks Racing sprint car.

Geoff and Michael Brown are proud Whyalla residents and they were keen to put that pride on show in Darwin recently.

The father and son team race sprint cars and have just formed the Whyalla Earthworks Racing team, named after their local business. The Chariots of Thunder series in the Top End was the first hit-out for the newly branded team and they were keen to represent and promote Whyalla.

That resulted in a call to Council to obtain the City of Whyalla logo to be proudly displayed on their brand new 410 cubic inch V8 sprint car. These are impressive machines that reach speeds up to 180km on the round dirt tracks.

“Whyalla has been good to our family and our business,” Michael said.

“Council has shown a lot of support too, it’s backed local people and backed our speedway club.

“Putting this logo on our car and trailer is a bit of a thank you from us and a message of ‘let’s promote our town’.”

PODIUM: Matt Egel claims second for the Whyalla Earthworks Racding team in the Chariots of Thunder Round 2.

The Whyalla Earthworks Racing team was one of only five South Australian teams at the Chariots of Thunder series run over two weekends in August and the only team from Whyalla. Scoring the services of leading South Australian driver Matt Egel, the team also took another 12 Whyallians up for the series to help out and provide support.

“This was the first series for the new team with a complete new sprint car and a refurbished trailer,” Michael said.

“We took a whole load of people from Whyalla as well to put in and help promote our town.”

With Egel at the wheel and competing against 49 other cars, the Whyalla Earthworks Racing team finished eighth overall with a second place in Round 2, a fifth and a couple of lesser results when caught up in a couple of bingles.

“We’re rapt with that result, it was a good first-up series for us,” Michael said.
