Here’s your chance to have a say on another exciting development in Whyalla.

The City of Whyalla has allocated nearly $400,000 to redevelop Norton Park (locally known as McRitchie Park) in Whyalla Stuart. The Whyalla Western Rejuvenation Project is part of the City Transformation Blueprint.

Funding of $183,000 for community amenity upgrades was obtained from the previous State Government.

Following the highly-acclaimed Wilson Park development, the western suburbs of the city will now be getting some love with this redevelopment as Council aims to work its way around the city with more projects and renewal initiatives.

Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin said public consultation was an important aspect in all city projects and Council would now like to know what you would like in a redeveloped Norton Park on McRitchie Crescent.

“This is a substantial project that is going to breathe a lot of new life into this area of our city,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“There is a new service station being built across the road and we see this park upgrade as being another important part of the City Transformation Blueprint.

“It is another project that is going to present a bright, new aspect to this area and another facility that will benefit local residents.

“We just need everyone to tell us what sort of features they’d like at Norton Park.”

REDEVELOPMENT: Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin at Norton Park.

Already on the drawing board for the park is a toilet block, more grass and landscaping while a call has already been made by residents for a pump track to cater for bike and scooter riders. Council has already visited several nearby schools to get the opinions of students.

The playground will also be replaced/upgraded with residents asked to nominate what sort of play equipment they’d like to see. The same public consultation recently saw a fantastic range of different equipment installed in the redeveloped Travers Street, Field Street, Ada Ryan Gardens and Pt Lowly playgrounds.

“We are aiming to have one signature feature in every playground and it appears a pump track is already one of the more popular choices for Norton Park,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“But we want you, the residents, to ultimately tell us what you’d like and what would be best suited to this park.”

Residents can have their say on the Norton Park redevelopment by filling out a, no-strings attached, simple survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2G73VWV

MAKEOVER: Norton Park will be redeveloped with input from the community.

There will also be additional public consultation sessions held at the park and Westland Shopping Centre with hard copies of the survey also available at the Council offices on Darling Terrace and the Whyalla Public Library on Ekblom Street.

The Whyalla Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) will also be holding a special “water battle” and circus workshop event at Norton Park on Friday, January 25 for people to come down, have some fun and have input on what they’d like in the redevelopment of the area.
