Remember them today and every day

As Mayor of Whyalla, I hope everyone in our city stops for a moment today to think about those who have served our country in times of war and in peace.

Even if you can’t make an Anzac Day dawn service or any of the memorial events today … it shouldn’t stop you taking pause for a moment and paying your own tribute to our defence force heroes.

Whyalla has a proud defence-force history and it is an unfortunate fact we have also lost many brave young people in battle over the years going right back to World War I. Just as significantly we have had, and still have, many people from Whyalla serving our country in the defence forces overseas and here in Australia in various roles.

Those brave Whyalla people, that lost their lives, paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country and their community. They will not be forgotten in this town and will be forever honoured on this day and every day.

We have them, and all those that have served and are still serving, to thank for the life we enjoy now in Whyalla.

Spare a thought also, for those families that lost loved ones and those families that carry on while their husbands, wives, brothers and sisters continue to defend our country from Australia and overseas.

Whyalla’s connection to these people stays strong with many of our brave soldiers utilising the army’s nearby Cultana Training Area while the Royal Military College – Duntroon cadets traditionally come to camp in our city and undertake critical urban training.

These are the brave Anzacs of today that carry on a proud tradition in our country and within our community.

Anzac Day is a day to remember and honour all these people but we should also keep them in our hearts every day.
