Friday, October 18, 2019

Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin was honoured to speak at the Whyalla Men’s Shed today as it hosted the Eyre Peninsula Men's Shed Muster at the Mount Laura Homestead.

Men's Shed members from around the region were welcomed by the Whyalla Men's Shed with the muster providing an opportunity for the members to network.

The muster also showcased the best of Whyalla including a tour of the homestead museum, the Whyalla Men's Shed and a display by the Whyalla Vintage Car Club.

Mayor McLaughlin congratulated the Whyalla Men’s Shed for hosting the event and said the group epitomised the spirit of community in Whyalla.

“As the Mayor of Whyalla I’m privileged to attend many events and these sort of community-based events are my favourite especially when they bring so many wonderful people into our fantastic city,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“Clubs like the Whyalla Men’s Club are the backbone and driving force of Whyalla and serve a real purpose in our community when they come together to support important issues like men's health.

“We are proud to be a supporter of this club and many others.”

VISITING WHYALLA: Some of the Men's Shed representatives from around the State at the Whyalla muster.

Whyalla Men's Shed President Brian Marshall said visitors had the opportunity to explore the homestead museum and learn more about the steel city.

"Surprisingly enough I've met three people from Whyalla who have never been to the museum before … and they've lived here longer than I have," he said.

"We're trying to promote mental health for men of our age, so events like this encourage them to have a bit of fun while getting out and talking to other people.

"The homestead is a good venue for us, it's got everything we need, I would recommend it to anyone."

Joining Mayor McLaughlin as guest speakers on the day included Mount Laura Homestead Caretaker Joanne Waters and Beyond Bank Marketing Coordinator David Miller.

Ms Waters discussed the history of the Mount Laura Homestead and how the museum came to be while Mr Miller touched on Beyond Bank's Community Reward Account which allows customers to support local community groups.

The Whyalla Men's Shed is on the corner of William Street and Norrie Avenue. Anyone interested in getting involved can call the shed on 8644 1484.
