RED MARKS THE SPOTS: A map showing the sections of road earmarked for upgrades.

Many more Whyalla roads will be getting a facelift after Boral Asphalt SA’s Whyalla operation was announced as the successful tender for the next round of Council’s roadworks.

Boral, the company responsible for nine roads being resurfaced last month, was successful in securing a $3.2m City of Whyalla contract for bituminous surfacing. More than 60 sections of road will be upgraded in this contract.

The recommendation to accept Boral’s bid was carried unanimously by the elected members at Wednesday night’s Special Council Meeting (March 27, 2019).

Council CEO Chris Cowley said the Boral bid was accepted due to its competitive price and the success of the work carried out by the company last month. Boral invested nearly $250,000 in the Whyalla Asphalt Plant, and employed two extra people at its Iron Knob Road quarry, to undertake last month’s road sealing program.

GOOD JOB: Boral work crews in Whyalla during February.

The road maintenance will consist of both hot mix and spray seal treatments as Council endeavours to spread the budget across the town to ensure longevity of the entire road network. There will be some changes to the lists below, as some of the jobs require specific pre-work that may not fit in the project timeframe. These roads will be included in the next round in July this year.

“We were very pleased with the quality of the Boral crews’ work last month and we’re looking forward to seeing more roads upgraded with this latest round of works,” Mr Cowley said.

“Road improvements and new surfaces are a key expense in the Council budget every year … they don’t come cheap and we can’t do every road all in one go.

“Council works carefully with the community to identify and work its way through the roads that have the greatest need for upgrade in a constant, rolling program.

“Those roads in need of upgrades that miss this round will, most likely, be included in the next round of funding.”

The work will commence in April this year and is expected to be finished before July.
