South Australia’s History Festival ramps up this weekend in Whyalla with the Maritime Museum Open Day.

Celebrating the 78th anniversary of the HMAS Whyalla launching, the museum and its spectacular grounds will come to life this Saturday for the open day. For just a gold coin entry there will be a host of entertainment, food, refreshments and, of course, full access to the Maritime Museum and the HMAS Whyalla (the big ship in front of the museum).

The museum’s new Navigation pop-up display is a must-see while the ship is open for people to explore with the help of guides on board. No need to book for this experience.

Adding to the historical attractions there will be a jumping castle, giant games, Whyalla’s very own community brass band and a roving D’Faces magician performing all sorts of tricks. The Navy Cadets will be cooking a barbecue, there will be a coffee van onsite along with Lions Club dishing up donuts and chips.

NAVAL PRESENCE: The Navy Cadets will be at the Maritime Museum Open Day again this year.

Visitor Centre Team Leader Teresa Coles said the annual event was a family day and a great way to check out the ship and museum in a carnival-type atmosphere.

“This is the ideal opportunity for anyone who hasn’t been to the Maritime Museum or seen through the HMAS Whyalla,” Teresa said.

“Even if you’ve been here before, this is a great chance to come back and see what’s new.

“You can wander around the ship at your leisure with guides on hand to answer questions, check out all the displays in the museum including the model trains and then spread out on the beautiful lawns to enjoy the food and entertainment.”

FAMILY DAY: There will be plenty of activities and fun for the kids at the Maritime Museum Open Day.

The Maritime Museum Open Day runs from 10am to 4pm this Saturday, May 11, with the ship open from 11am – 3pm. A gold coin donation gets you into the festivities with the proceeds going towards restoration projects on HMAS Whyalla.

The Whyalla Maritime Museum is on Lincoln Highway on the northern entrance to Whyalla. Phone the Whyalla Visitor Information Centre on 1800 088 589 for more information.
